Each client will be approached with an existential theoretical orientation. An emphasis on authenticity, meaning, wholeness, personal growth, and the relationship between counselor and counselee will be promoted.
We have been shaped into who we are through events, circumstances and personal interactions from our earliest moments. David calls those responses "safety systems." These are the things we developed to keep us safe from physical and emotional harm. Everyone has these parts of themselves, and they mainly have good intentions. However, they are often given too much power. Therapy will include identifying these parts and re-purposing them for the positive. Additionally, both ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy) and EMDR will be utilized in situations where unwanted memories from one's past intrude in their present life. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, examining thought processes and beliefs that inhibit the ability to function personally and relationally, which impedes authenticity and wholeness, will be utilized along with ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) to encourage a client toward what they value in relationships, leisure, work/education, and personal growth/education. Finally, as a basis for all counseling, it is believed that everyone’s past impacts who they are and how they respond to life presently. Because of this, psychodynamic philosophy is foundational in approaching every client.
Sessions between a counselor and client may be emotionally and psychologically open. It is important to understand that the relationship will remain on a professional level rather than a personal one. Contact will be limited to the paid sessions in the office, or on occasion, over the phone.
